Is this normal in Russia?
sonicsandspellbooks asked: Hey! So, I randomly found out that you go to UChicago, and I'm seriously considering going there. I want to be pre-med, but I don't know if I'll be able to handle the rigor of the courses and maintain a good GPA. And be able to have a social life. Are the classes there really intense? Judging from what I've heard, some of them are awful.
Hey! Generally the trend that I’ve seen here is that if you are good enough to get into UChicago, you are good enough to (relatively) succeed in the classes. And even though sometimes I tend to freak out and worry about grades (read: always) it’s actually pretty easy to get a “good” GPA and be satisfied. The classes are hard, but kids here tend to see that as a point of pride–I think the “if I wanted an A I would have gone to Harvard” t-shirt that they sell around campus accurately reflects its student body. That’s just my opinion, though. Also, beware of the “that kid."
As far as the social life goes, I’ve never really heard of anyone actually having a problem–if a social life means going out to Chicago three times a week and getting dinner or seeing a movie, that’s manageable. If it means drinking five times a week, that’s manageable too. I became a member of a sorority once I got here, and I think that for me it was a great decision and I’ve had some great times with the girls I’ve met there. And every Wednesday (tonight!)–Bar Night!
